For Teachers/Group Leaders

This page give you more details about Outdoor Education, and its proven impact providing learning opportunities to young people.  It explains how Outdoor Education works, the role you play, and has more information if you enjoyed the activities.

Why Outdoor Education

We promote personal and social development, environmental awareness and enrich traditional teaching methods. We help young people to become successful learners, confident individuals and responsible citizens. Outcomes can include:

  • Fun and enjoyment
  • Inclusion
  • Chance to make new friends
  • Self awareness and self esteem
  • Communication and Team Working Skills
  • A change in pupil behaviour

How it works

We work by providing direct learning opportunities in the natural environment.  We provide situations where actions have real consequences, and where young people can experiment with and reflect on the choices they make.  Outdoor learning provides a valuable tool of self-assessment to pupils, and works best when used as part of the wider self-development of pupils.

We can work with you to develop a programme to suit the needs of the pupils, and would encourage you to use the sessions as part of the pupil’s wider development.  This reinforces the messages the pupils learn during their time with us, and adds value to the experience.

What we want from you

The role of school staff is crucial to the success of our courses whether you take part or not. You will have pastoral responsibility, under the direction of the course organiser, for the welfare of the young people whilst taking part in our activities.  You will accompany the group and do not need any special skills, although a sense of humour is always useful…

Each activity session will be run by our experienced tutors, who are responsible for the management and safety of the group during the activity.  We will work with you to encourage and support the group, providing a safe and enjoyable yet challenging experience.  We will support you to control the group, although you have overall responsibility for their behaviour.

We will work with you to develop the best experience possible for your pupils.  We have experience of working with pupils of all ages and abilities and can tailor a course to suit their needs.

 Enjoyed the Activities?

Outdoor activities are a great way to keep fit and make friends for adults as well as young people.

We can arrange activities to suit adult groups, including for INSET or training days.

Please also see our links page for groups/societies in the Birmingham area that provide outdoor activities for adults.
